Did you know that America is facing a serious health crisis?  More than 93 million Americans struggle with obesity in some form.  The average adult person weighs 23 pounds more than people did in the 80s.  That’s due to a change in lifestyle that encourages convenience and a diet that is dominated by processed foods, especially carbohydrates.  Carbs are masters of storing fat, which might’ve been okay for our ancestors who moved around a lot more than we do today. But for the modern American, carbs are weighing us down in more ways than one.  Obese adults spend a whopping 42% more on direct healthcare costs than adults who are at a healthy weight.

Science-Based Eating

So what’s the science behind all of this?  The MealMD approach focuses on teaching your body to burn fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates.  That doesn’t mean 0 carbs, just fewer carbs and from more nutritious sources.  Our meals replace refined carbohydrates with delicious, nutrient-dense veggies, yummy, filling fats, and body-fueling protein.  The “secret” is following a macronutrient ratio of 50% fat, 30% protein, and 20% carbs.  These numbers may be a little different from person to person, which is why we offer coaching and additional teaching materials to ensure you’re getting the most out of your meals.

What is a Macronutrient?

Macronutrients, or macros, are essentially the components that all foods are broken down into.  The ones our bodies use in the largest amounts are fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. It’s a simple system, but determining what your own personal macros are can be tricky and rely on a variety of factors such as weight, height, sex, and activity level.  MealMD removes the need for guesswork and provides you with three chef prepared meals a day, six days a week, all of which are fresh and ready to eat.  All you have to do is heat and enjoy!

Insulin Resistance

So much of our health relies on our diet.  In recent years, as obesity has become an increasingly large health concern, insulin resistance is another issue we’ve seen arise.  In short, insulin resistance is a body’s inability to properly use insulin (a hormone produced in the pancreas).  When we develop insulin resistance, our muscles, fat, and liver begin to use insulin less effectively, and can’t utilize glucose found in our blood for energy.  It presents commonly in people who struggle with obesity, high blood pressure, cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes.

By its very nature, MealMD combats insulin resistance.  Our chef prepared meals are prepared with health in mind, without processed ingredients, and with minimal sugar.  We focus on healthy fats, proteins, and the good kinds of carbs found in fruits and vegetables. 

Hormonal Imbalance

Believe it or not, a lot of the way we feel on the day-to-day comes down to hormones.  When our hormones are out of whack, it can be tough to get our bodies in the shape and health we want them in.  Hormone imbalances can cause weight gain, fatigue, and emotional distress.  Additionally, hormones regulate other bodily functions, so keeping them balanced plays a huge role in our overall wellbeing.

At MealMD, we bring back the (good) fat, which supports proper hormone production, and reduces carbohydrate intake which boosts insulin sensitivity, can strengthen reproductive health, and regulate cortisol (the stress hormone).
